ACS Tuition Exchange Program

This statement provides information as well as a prospective timetable for the selection of recipients. Please be aware that a candidate for ACS Tuition Exchange does not enjoy any advantage in the admissions process. The TE applicants who are accepted to the University will be ranked with primary emphasis on academic achievement in high school, aptitude for college study, test scores, and potential for contribution to the University community. Please note that due to the intense competition and small number of tuition exchange slots, the University of Richmond has in the past frequently limited the award of new ACS tuition exchange to incoming first-year students. For 2010-11 we will also accept TE applications from current students and transfers and hope that we will be able to offer one or two ACS TE scholarships to applicants in one or both of these categories.

To be eligible for consideration the student or parent must meet their sponsor institution's criteria for eligibility, file the formal application for scholarship through their sponsor institution and apply for admission through the University of Richmond's Office of Admission. The deadline for applying for a TE scholarship coincides with the admission application deadline. We do not award TE scholarships for single semesters.

The selection and announcement of Tuition Exchange recipients will be made within a few days of the Office of Admission decisions. This allows the student adequate time to accept or decline the TE opportunity on or before May 1st. The number of Tuition Exchange benefits extended by the University is largely determined by the volume of University of Richmond faculty and staff dependents who apply and receive Tuition Exchange benefits from other colleges and universities. For the 2009-10 academic year we will have 8 imports and 9 exports on the ACS program.

Our total import number is difficult to determine until all of the export applicants from the University of Richmond receive their tuition exchange decisions in April.

Presently, the University offers Tuition Exchange benefits in the amount of full tuition, but the ACS recipient is subject to an annual participation fee of $1,500 that is payable to their sponsor college or university in early July. A student will be awarded an ACS tuition exchange scholarship for 8 semesters, and a student will retain their scholarship as long as they remain in good academic standing. An ACS TE scholarship recipient must file a recertification form annually through his/her sponsor college or university. A copy of this recertification form must also be sent to the Associated Colleges of the South. No fees or summer sessions are covered by the ACS TE benefit. No study abroad programs are covered unless it is for an exchange program which requires payment of tuition solely to the University of Richmond.

Associated Colleges of the South tuition exchange applicants are stongly encouraged to apply for financial aid. If you are a Virginia resident and receive a TE Scholarship to a private ACS VA school, it is your responsibility to apply for the Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant (VTAG); the amount of this annual grant is approximately $3,000. The VTAG will be deducted from the amount of tuition. Forms are available in the Financial Aid Office, and the deadline for VTAG application is July 31 prior to enrollment.
