Information for Import Applications

Tuition Exchange, Inc. Program

This statement provides information as well as a prospective timetable for the selection of recipients. Please be aware that a candidate for Tuition Exchange does not enjoy any advantage in the admissions process. The TE applicants who are accepted to the University will be ranked with primary emphasis on academic achievement in high school, aptitude for college study, test scores, and potential for contribution to the University community. Please note that due to the intense competition and small number of tuition exchange slots, the University of Richmond limits the award of new tuition exchange primarily to incoming first-year students and to a very limited number of currently enrolled upperclassmen and transfers; however, the decision to award TE scholarships to students in these two categories won't be made until spring 2010 when we learn how many new TE exports UR will have.  Please note that we cannot guarantee that a student who enrolls without TE his/her first-year will receive a new TE scholarship as an upperclassman

To be eligible for consideration the student or parent must meet their sponsor institution's criteria for eligibility, file the formal application for scholarship through their sponsor institution, and apply for admission through the University of Richmond's Office of Admission. The deadline for applying for a TE scholarship coincides with the early decision deadline if you are applying early decision and the regular decision deadline if you are applying regular decision. Please note that TE scholarships are awarded for a total of 8 semesters (fall and spring only). No summer sessions are covered by the TE scholarship. The student must carry a minimum load of 12 credit hours.

The selection and announcement of Tuition Exchange recipients will be made within a few days of the Office of Admission decisions. This gives the student adequate time to accept or decline the TE opportunity on or before May 1st. The number of Tuition Exchange benefits extended by the University is largely determined by the volume of University of Richmond faculty and staff dependents who apply and receive Tuition Exchange benefits from other colleges and universities. For 2009-10 entry the University received approximately 90 TE applications.  We will have 48 TE import scholars at UR in 2009-10.   We awarded 3 new TE scholarships to early decision applicants and a total of 9 new TE scholarships for 2009-10.  Our total import number for 2010-11 will be difficult to determine until all of the export applicants from the University of Richmond receive their tuition exchange decisions in April 2010.  Our tuition for 2009-10 is $40,010.  New TE scholars who entered in fall 2009 received TE scholarships in the amount of $34,050 which left them with a balance of approximately $5,960 in tuition plus room board and fees.  The annual minimum TE scholarship amount that has been  set by TE, Inc. in Washington, DC for 2010-11 is $30,000.   A TE scholar receives a tuition exchange scholarship for 8 semesters and keeps the tuition exchange scholarship as long as he/she remains in good academic and moral standing.  A TE scholarship recipient must file a recertification form annually through the TE Officer at his/her sponsor college or university. No fees or summer sessions are covered by the benefit. No study abroad programs are covered by the benefit, unless it is for an exchange program which requires payment of tuition solely to the University of Richmond. If you are a Virginia resident and receive a TE Scholarship at a private Virginia college, it will be your responsibility to apply for the Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant (VTAG); the amount of this grant is determined annually; it is approximately $3,000.  Forms are available in the Financial Aid Office, and the deadline for VTAG application is July 31 prior to enrollment. (Note: Associated Colleges of the South tuition exchange applicants are strongly encouraged to apply for financial aid.) If you have further questions about the Tuition Exchange Program at the University of Richmond, please contact Mary Dillon, Coordinator Tuition Exchange Programs, at (804) 289-8150 or mail:mdillon@richmond.edu.
